In 2018, Avennia partners Chris Peterson and Marty Taucher discovered WeatherEye Vineyard, a groundbreaking site atop Red Mountain, Washington. Inspired by its potential, they launched LIMINAL, a winery dedicated to crafting exceptional wines from this unique vineyard. WeatherEye, planted in 2016, is Washington’s highest vineyard, ranging from 950 to 1,410 feet, with some blocks extending beyond the Red Mountain AVA into the Columbia Valley. Its innovative design and farming practices, led by owner Cam Myhrvold and vineyard manager Ryan Johnson, have redefined Washington viticulture.
WeatherEye’s steep slopes, high-density plantings, and diverse clonal selections set it apart. Johnson, a respected viticulturist, spent a year studying the site before planting, tailoring each block to its microclimate. The vineyard features unusual training methods, such as en echalas (single-stake vertical training) and bush vines, to optimize sun exposure, airflow, and resilience. Native plants and insectaries were preserved to promote biodiversity and sustainability.
The vineyard grows both Bordeaux and Rhône varieties, with a focus on Syrah, Grenache, and white wine cultivars—uncommon choices for Red Mountain. Its wines, crafted by top winemakers like Todd Alexander, have garnered acclaim, attracting prestigious brands such as Force Majeure and Sleight of Hand. LIMINAL, founded exclusively on WeatherEye fruit, exemplifies the vineyard’s promise, showcasing the site’s ability to produce wines of extraordinary depth and character.
WeatherEye represents a bold step forward for Washington wine, blending innovation with respect for the land. Its success underscores the potential of Red Mountain’s desert terroir and the vision of those who dare to push boundaries.
