Antoniolo winery, situated in Gattinara, Alto Piemonte, is widely considered the region's most important reference-point estate. Founded in 1948 by Mario Antoniolo, the estate is now run by siblings Alberto and Lorella Antoniolo. During the 1950s and 60s, the Antoniolo family acquired some of the area's finest vineyards, and by the 1970s, they had an impressive collection of Gattinara's top crus, including the Osso San Grato vineyard monopole. In 1974, Rosanna Antoniolo, Mario's daughter, revolutionized Gattinara by bottling her Osso San Grato and San Francesco as single-vineyard wines, following the advice of Italian wine journalist Luigi Veronelli.
Today, the estate spans 14 hectares and produces approximately 4,600 cases of wine annually, adhering to the strict guidelines set by their pioneering mother. Fermentations are conducted slowly in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and all Gattinaras are aged as long as Riservas. The vineyard management practices integrated pest management, with low doses of copper and sulfur, avoiding systemic products and chemical fertilizers.
Antoniolo was the first producer in the Gattinara DOCG to bottle cru wines and is one of the few to bottle 100% Nebbiolo without blending in other varietals. The vineyards, located in the Gattinara crus of Osso San Grato, San Francesco, and Castelle, were planted around fifty years ago on glacial and volcanic soils, which are high in acidity and rich in minerals, respectively.
The winery is well-regarded for producing Coste della Sesia DOC and Gattinara DOCG wines, and has received praise from publications like Wine Spectator, Vinous, and Gambero Rosso for its high-quality offerings and dedication to the region's heritage.
